RFC: This Week in Kanbandev?

Feb 03
2011

This post is going to be one of those relatively few times when I ask people to comment. If you’re an RSS reader, and you care about Kanban, please consider visiting the site and letting me know what you think.

I’ve done a few posts this year entitled This Week in Kanbandev. The stated goal of this series was to get me writing more and get me reading the excellent Kanbandev mailing list. It accomplished both of those things, but I don’t see a future in the series in its current format. I find now that, after killing off my backlog, I’m interested in reading Kanbandev again, but I’m now putting it off because the thought of boiling down an interesting, 80+ comment thread into a few sentences is not a pleasant one. Because of this, I’ve not done a post on the subject in two weeks, and haven’t really missed.

That all said, I really do enjoying reading the list and sharing what I find. However, sharing is a two-sided coin – I’d like what I’m sharing to be somewhat useful to people. My current format is so short that the only benefit I think someone would get out of it is to be pointed to the list. People who are interested in subscribing to the list will do so. People who aren’t interested in reading the whole list probably can’t glean enough useful tidbits from my summaries. People who are already reading the whole list will continue to do so and not bother to visit the site.

So, here’s where the Request For Comments comes in:

  • What have you thought of the series so far?
  • Do you have any suggestions for Kanban-related topics I could write about?
  • Do you have any suggestions for a different format (perhaps a “best of the week” instead of a summary)?
  • Do you have any Kanban questions that I could help you with?

Please leave a comment below, and thanks in advance!

Rounding out NaBloPoMo

Jan 07
2011

According to my calendar, it’s the last day of November, and thus the last day of NaBloPoMo. Time to reflect on the month.

I’ve written more this month than in any previous month, and I think I’ve written (mostly) better content. Sure, there’s been some filler, but I’ve also put out together what I think are some good posts. I’ve figured out what I’m decent at writing about (summarizing presentations, explaining concepts) and what I don’t really like doing (“haircut blog” style personal updates). Without the obligation of posting every day, I can focus more on what I want to write.

So, what now? I may take a couple of days off, but then again I have a few topics kicking around in my head that I’ve been wanting to write about but haven’t had a chance to. I also want to start posting summaries / mind maps of various books I’m reading. There’s plenty to write about, and I’ve gotten pretty positive feedback from people I respect, so I hope to keep doing it. I’ll also probably move back to WordPress, since Tumblr doesn’t support comments and the interface isn’t that much more complicated.

Thanks to everyone for reading this month!

Some random tidbits

Jan 06
2011

I need to finish working on the presentation I’ll be giving this Wednesday, so no well thought out blog post today. If I wasn’t doing NaBloPoMo, I’d skip today, but I want to actually see it through to the end. Here’s a few things on my mind.

  • Goodbye Microsoft, Hello Facebook – an employee’s farewell letter and advice for Microsoft employees. Almost all of it is applicable to non-MS staff.
  • I like Tumblr’s interface, but I dislike that there is no comment system. I’m still contemplating switching back to my WordPress install now that I have writing inertia.
  • I’ve been toying around with doing a series of blog posts on links I see between some Buddhist philosophy and Agile / Lean approaches to software. I don’t really want to publish them without making sure the ideas are well fleshed out, but I’m working on it.
  • Almost 20 years on, I still love games from the SNES era. I’m currently working my way through a few Japanese RPGs that have relatively recently been fan translated.

I hope all of my Vancouver readers are enjoying the snow!
